Online Safety
Keeping Our Children Safe Online
Technology plays an important role in the lives of children and families. It provides wonderful opportunities for learning, creativity, communication and entertainment. However, as the digital world continues to evolve, it is important that children understand how to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully.
At Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, we recognise the importance of helping our pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to navigate the online world. Through our Computing curriculum, Online Safety lessons and wider school life, we aim to equip children with the tools to make positive and informed choices when using technology.
Throughout school, we teach children:
To recognise and respond to cyberbullying, understanding its impact on others and knowing what to do if they experience or witness it.
To communicate safely and respectfully online, recognising that people may not always be who they claim to be and understanding the importance of protecting personal information.
To speak to a trusted adult if something online makes them feel worried, uncomfortable, upset or unsafe.
To question the reliability of online information, recognising that not everything they see or read on the internet is accurate or trustworthy.
To use search engines and online resources responsibly, developing safe and effective research skills.
To understand the importance of kindness, respect and responsible digital citizenship when interacting with others online.
Working Together to Promote Online Safety
We understand that children’s use of technology extends beyond the school environment, with much of their online activity taking place at home and on personal devices. For this reason, working in partnership with parents and carers is an important part of keeping our children safe.
We encourage families to talk regularly with their children about their online experiences, establish clear boundaries and ensure that children know where to turn for support if something goes wrong.
We are pleased to provide links to a range of trusted organisations offering guidance, advice and resources to support parents and carers in navigating online safety.
National Online Safety
We encourage parents and carers to access the resources available through National Online Safety, which provides guidance on a wide range of online platforms, apps and digital safety topics.
