Governors

What is the role of the governing body at Sacred Heart School?

Our overall objective is to promote high standards of educational achievement by the school. The day to day running of the school is the responsibility of our Headteacher and Senior Leadership team (SLT), who have professional and managerial responsibility for the school. Our role is largely strategic in helping the SLT to determine the direction and aims of the school, then monitoring and overseeing the actions that will help us achieve our objectives. Governors are meant to be a 'critical friend' to the school – a balance of a supportive but questioning and challenging approach. Our responsibilities are:

  • giving the pupils the best education and care possible
  • seeking to see standards raised
  • agreeing and monitoring policies
  • asking questions to check on progress
  • making sure the National Curriculum is broad, balanced, enjoyable and inclusive
  • checking that the school encourages pupils' spiritual, moral and cultural development, and that special educational needs are met
  • agreeing and monitoring the school budget and salaries
  • helping in the appointment of staff, including the Headteacher
  • ensuring the buildings are properly maintained.
